A state-controlled lottery is a type of gambling game run by a government in which participants purchase tickets for the chance to win a prize. Typically, the winnings from these games are earmarked for public use or distributed to charities. In addition to the traditional state-controlled lotteries, many nations have private companies that conduct a lottery on their behalf. These organizations are governed by laws and regulations set by the states or provinces in which they operate.

Despite their popularity, state-controlled lotteries are not without controversy. Some governments have banned them, while others have embraced them as an effective way to raise money for education and other public purposes. In the United States, for example, large portions of state lottery profits are used to fund public education systems. Likewise, in Liechtenstein, lotteries have become an important source of income for the country.

Lotteries are also common in Canada, which has four nationwide lotteries: the Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador), the Loto-Québec (Quebec), the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario), and the Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Northwest Territories, Yukon). All of these lotteries are operated by their respective provincial/territorial governments. In addition, two privately owned re-sellers, Netlotto Pty Ltd and Jumbo Interactive, sell a wide range of lottery products in Australia.

In the United Kingdom, the National Lottery is a public lottery regulated by the Gambling Commission. The lottery generates around £14 billion in revenue each year for the government, which uses it for a wide range of good causes. Its main competitors are the Camelot Group, which operates the UK Powerball and EuroMillions lotteries, and the CRWG, which runs the Irish Lotto.

For many poor Vietnamese people, selling lottery tickets is the only way to make a living. Since Vietnam’s social security systems are not yet fully operational, they choose this job over the more socially detested act of begging. On a good day, a lottery ticket seller can earn up to 230 000 VN-Dong (10 US-Dollars) for a day of hard work.

With the help of the Hanoi Investment and Planning Department, a foreign company from Malaysia, Berjaya Corp Bhd (BCorp) and its subsidiary, Berjaya Gia Thinh (Berjaya GTI), have signed a business cooperation contract with Vietnamese Vietlott to develop computerized lotteries in the country. The exclusive project is valued at more than 18 trillion VND and will last for a period of 18 years.
