The first lottery in Liechtenstein was held in 1706. It was organized by the Princely House of Liechtenstein and remained a private lottery until 1993 when it became a public lottery. The current government-authorized and regulated lotteries are the PLUS Lotto, LOTTO 6/49, Keno Lotto, and Instant Kiwi. These are marketed under the umbrella brand of The International Lottery in Liechtenstein Foundation (ILLF), which is responsible for launching and processing the first ever online lottery transaction. The ILLF also supports charitable projects and organizations domestically and internationally.
A government-authorized and regulated lottery is a national or regional lottery organization that operates a multi-product game portfolio to raise funds for a specific cause. The game portfolio may include scratch-off tickets, draw games, keno, bingo, and sports betting, among others. The lottery is a popular way to fund education, health, and social welfare in many countries around the world. In addition to generating revenue for the lottery operator, a national or regional lottery may also serve as an effective means of marketing a nation’s products and services abroad.
In the United States, lottery operations are regulated by the state governments. The New York State Lottery is the largest state-operated lottery with over $10 billion in total sales, and its annual distributions of more than $2.5 billion are the highest in the country. The New Jersey Lottery is another top-performing lottery in the country, with more than $8 billion in total sales and over $2 billion in annual distributions.
Lotteries in Vietnam are managed by a state-owned company, Vietlott. Established in 2011 with VND500 billion in capital, Vietlott has become one of the largest companies in the country, bringing in nearly VND305 billion from its Mega 6/45 lottery alone in the first eight months of this year. Its total assets are estimated to exceed VND500 billion, excluding its investments in real estate and other property.
Locally, lottery tickets are sold at retail stores throughout the city. Individual sellers strive to sell as much as possible during a 16-hour shift, selling up to 250 tickets daily. This makes it possible for some of them to make a decent living. The average profit is about US-Cents per ticket.
