In Laos, the communist country that borders China, government officials have been rigging the national lottery in order to avoid large pay-outs, sources told RFA’s Lao Service. Drawings for the lotto, which take place three times a week, often show numbers that appear on purchased tickets only briefly or never at all before disappearing from the screen. For example, the winning number in last week’s drawing was 509, but it appeared on only a few of the purchased tickets.
Laos officials say they are aware of the problem but have no control over the lottery.
