Lottery Online is a lottery-style game played over the Internet. Players purchase tickets, which are then entered into a drawing for prizes. These prizes may include cash and goods. The prizes are awarded by a central agency, which collects entries and distributes winnings. Licensed online lotteries are regulated by the state in which they operate. The lottery industry is one of the fastest growing sectors of Internet commerce. In the United States, there are currently over 900 Internet-based lotteries. In 2004, the global online gambling market was estimated to be worth approximately USD 3.2 billion. The largest lotteries are operated by government agencies, such as the State of Georgia, the National Lottery Commission in Mexico and the California State Lottery. In addition, there are many privately-owned and operated online lotteries.
In Canada, the provincial and territorial governments oversee the operation of lotteries. Each has a unique set of games and prizes. The Interprovincial Lottery Corporation, a Canadian consortium of five regional lottery corporations, runs four nationwide lotteries: Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max (which replaced Lotto Super 7 in September 2009), Daily Grand and Millionaire Life. The corporation’s regional affiliates are Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador), Loto-Quebec (Quebec) Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario), Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Yukon Territory, Northwest Territories) and BC Lottery Corporation (British Columbia).
While there are many legitimate online lottery sites, there are also numerous unlicensed lotteries. These websites offer a variety of games, including the popular scratch-off cards. In some cases, these games are used to raise money for charity or for educational purposes. Unlicensed lotteries are illegal, but they remain profitable for some operators. In some cases, the sites even use stolen credit card numbers to process payments.
There are currently two state-licensed lotteries in the US, both operated by GTech Corporation, based in West Greenwich, Rhode Island. The company claims that it administers 70% of worldwide online and instant lottery business. Its products are used in more than 200 countries and territories, including some of the world’s biggest retail outlets.
The company’s products are also sold by some independent retailers, including those in the UK and France. In addition, many individual sellers sell tickets for the various state lotteries. Huong, a Vietnamese woman selling lottery tickets in the streets of Saigon, works 16-hour shifts. She wakes up at 5 am, has a breakfast of rice and vegetable soup and begins her trek around the city to sell lottery tickets. On good days she sells 250 tickets, which earns her a daily profit of about 11 US-dollars. Her husband Manh assists her.
To claim a prize in Maryland, you must present your ticket and a valid photo ID at any retailer. If your prize is more than $600, you must provide proof of social security number or federal tax ID number and a photograph to redeem it at the Lottery Headquarters. This is to prevent fraudulent or unauthorized redemptions of larger prizes.
