Laos state officials rig the country’s lottery, which is run by private business interests with ties to the ruling elite, RFA’s Lao Service has learned. A government official said the enterprise had previously issued lotteries four times a week and added a scratch-card lottery, but the public complained that such a high number of lotteries encouraged people to become addicted to gambling. Officials have since cut the amount of lotteries to two a week and stopped the scratch-card lottery, the official said. The official also called for action to regulate illegal lottery operations and said investment should be made in a system that could trace those selling the lottery online.
