One such incident occurred on Oct. 14, when the number 509 disappeared from tickets sold throughout the day before the drawing, but reappeared only an hour before the drawing. This number is associated with the buffalo, a symbol of good luck in Laos. A resident of the capital Vientiane told RFA that this was an intentional change. It was a deliberate attempt to discourage people from buying tickets with that number.
