Lotteries are government-sponsored games of chance that award prizes to participants based on the numbers they select. They are a popular form of gambling and can be found around the world. Some have become hugely profitable, and others have a controversial reputation. In some countries, winning a lottery is illegal, but in others it is not. Lottery profits are often used for public benefits.
The first national lotteries were established in Europe in the 18th century. In the United States, the state-run New York Lottery has had the longest history of operation and continues to be one of the biggest in the world. Its profits are used to benefit education and other social programs in the state. In addition, the New York Lottery has been one of the first to adopt online gaming technology. Its website is operated by GTech Corporation, which also provides the software for many of the world’s other Internet lotteries.
In Canada, the provincial government operates four national lotteries under an umbrella organization called the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation. These include Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max (which replaced Lotto Super 7 in September 2009), Daily Grand and Millionaire Life. In addition, the provinces and territories operate keno and video lottery terminals. The proceeds from these operations are distributed by the Lottery Grants Board to charities and community organizations.
Laos is a small country, but it has a large and vibrant gambling industry. While its state-run lotteries are not as large as those in the US, they have their own unique charms. This talk explores the history of lotteries in Laos and their role in society. It will discuss the mechanics of the lottery system and how it has been rationalized as an economic activity that is coherent with socialist goals. It will also look at how the lottery was experienced on the ground during ethnographic fieldwork in Luang Prabang in 2013-2016.
In Laos, there are several types of lotteries including the state-run taipa and the private Sokxay Chaleun. The state-run taipa is the most popular and features multiple tiers of prize amounts with the top prize being 1 billion kip. The Sokxay lottery is similar in that there are tiers of prizes, but it is more limited than the taipa. Both lotteries offer a number of different games, such as 2 digits, 3 digits, 4 digits and 5 digits. Each game has its own corresponding prize amounts and can be purchased from retail outlets or from the official lottery website. In addition, both lotteries have mobile apps and electronic sales systems nationwide.
