The friend, Laiza Chao, is an immigrant from the same Iu Mien community as Saephan, a southeast Asian ethnic group that assisted American forces in the Vietnam War and then fled to Thailand and the West Coast of the US to avoid persecution. Chao and her family live in the Portland suburb of Milwaukie, where they run a small grocery store. They plan to open a Vietnamese restaurant with their share of the prize money.
