A lottery winner reveals her plans to share her winnings with her family and travel to South Korea, Japan and Vietnam.
Dokkeo, 33, who won a lottery prize worth 3 million kip (US$1,200), said she will spend some of her winnings on a new house. She also intends to buy her children some nice presents and use the rest for traveling. “I love travelling so much, and this will be the chance for me to visit some beautiful places,” she told RFA’s Lao Service.
She says she will also spend some of the money on a trip to her hometown in central Vietnam. Besides that, she will invest some of it in her new business that she is starting up. “I want to sell my handmade bags, which are made from rattan and other local materials,” she said.
The state lottery enterprise, which runs legal lotteries in the country, has been facing a drop in revenue since people have been buying foreign lotteries, even though the country has its own national lottery. Officials have said private business interests run the illegal lotteries, which lure people into habitual betting.
However, the state lottery’s chief executive Bounchom Bounchom has vowed to step up efforts to regulate and address illegal lotteries. He told lawmakers that a committee had been formed to tackle the problem, but that it would take time and investment to develop a system to identify those involved. He said the company was still responsible for managing the national lottery and that private business interests should not be allowed to be involved because they cannot be trusted.
