Finance Minister Bounchom Ubonpaseuth told lawmakers that illegal foreign lotteries sold online are a growing problem and must be addressed. He added that the state lottery enterprise has cut back on its number of lotteries issued each week after public complaints that the frequent lottery sales encouraged people to become addicted to gambling.

Laos lottery officials are rigging the system by manipulating winning numbers, sources in the communist country tell RFA’s Lao Service. In one case, a drawing for the national lottery on Oct. 14 showed the number 509, but this same number vanished from purchased tickets throughout the day.

The winner of a recent lottery prize in the country’s capital said her first priority would be to buy a new home. She also wants to take advantage of the money to travel to South Korea, Japan and Vietnam.
