Online Lottery

Lottery is a game in which numbers are drawn to win prizes. In the US, lottery games are operated by state governments or private companies authorized to offer games under a gaming license. In addition to the traditional draw-style games, many states now allow players to participate in video lottery terminals (slot machines in all but name). Instant tickets are also sold. These are similar to traditional lottery tickets, but are generally more convenient and often cheaper.

Online lottery is a burgeoning business. In 2010, it accounted for about half of all lottery sales in the US, according to industry estimates. A variety of sites sell tickets and conduct monthly draws for prizes ranging from cash to sports team drafts. A handful of large providers run national lotteries, while others concentrate on the regional market. These businesses operate under tight security and rely on advanced software to detect fraudulent activity, and they are legally licensed by state and local authorities.

The largest lottery in the world is the Spanish state-owned Loterias y Apuestas del Estado, which offers a minimum prize of EUR2.4 million per drawing and has a top prize/jackpot of up to EUR4 million. The company’s parent, Camelot Group, also runs the EuroMillions European-wide lottery and has an operation in the Isle of Man.

In Canada, lottery games are overseen by the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation, a consortium of provincial/territorial governments and independent organizations that run the Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario), and Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut). The Interprovincial Lottery Corporation sells tickets through the Internet, by telephone, and at brick-and-mortar stores.

The Lottery for Arts is a fundraising event that gives art enthusiasts the opportunity to acquire a work of fine art from Blue Line Arts while supporting the gallery’s education and outreach programs. Guests can purchase tickets through the gallery’s staff members or online. Each ticket is registered to a specific guest’s name. This allows guests to make their selection during the live event when their name is called. Guests who are not present to receive their artwork will be contacted by the gallery to arrange for pick-up.
