Online Lottery – A Fast Growing Sector of the Lottery Industry

In the US a lottery is a game of chance operated by a state or local government that gives out prizes to players based on a random draw of numbers. Prizes can be cash, goods or services. The lottery is a form of gambling and is therefore regulated by federal and state laws. In addition, some countries regulate the lottery industry by limiting the amount of prizes available or banning it altogether. The lottery is a popular activity and raises billions of dollars for governments each year. In the United States, lotteries are not only legal but also a significant source of revenue for public education systems.

Online lottery is a fast growing sector of the lottery industry, with tens of thousands of people playing on-line lotteries every day. Many of these online games are free, but many charge a premium to play the game or for other reasons. A company called GTech Corporation administers 70% of the worldwide Internet lottery business, and it has won a series of patents related to this business. Its patent applications are filed under the name “Lottery Management System.”

The first online lottery was launched in 1995, but it was not until 2000 that it became profitable. The first Internet-based lotteries were run by the International Lottery in Liechtenstein Foundation (ILLF), a nonprofit organization that operates online lotteries for charitable purposes. In addition to operating online lotteries, the ILLF promotes charitable projects and organizations both domestically and internationally.

Lao lottery officials are rigging the national lottery drawing, sources in the communist nation tell RFA’s Lao Service. The drawing, which is held three times each week, often shows numbers that vanish from purchased tickets or are deemed unlucky. For example, on Oct. 14 this year, the number 134 disappeared from purchased tickets but reappeared an hour before the drawing took place.

Private business interests have taken over the operation of the national lottery, and a state official who spoke to RFA on condition of anonymity said that those business interests include people with connections to the ruling elite. He said he hopes the state will resume control of the lottery, because “private business interests can’t be trusted.”
