This talk explores the politics, economics and morality of lotteries in a communist state. It examines the mechanics of the lottery and the way in which the state has rationalized the activity as an economic activity that is consistent with socialist goals. It will also discuss how the lottery reveals some of the complex dynamics of the social organization of the state. The talk is based on research done in Luang Prabang while Dr Zuckerman was doing ethnographic fieldwork in 2013-2016.
