Drawings are frequently marred by the disappearance of favored numbers or by the appearance of numbers deemed unlucky. In one case, the number 509 appeared only as a 5 on tickets sold throughout the day of the Oct. 14 drawing, a source told RFA’s Lao Service.
The Laos lottery is overseen by the Ministry of Finance and supervised by the provincial and municipal governments. The country has four nationwide lotteries – Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max, Daily Grand, and Millionaire Life – administered by the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation. Several private companies also operate lotteries in the country. Some are licensed by the government while others are not. The latter charge premiums on the base price of a lottery ticket. This practice is widely condemned by lawmakers in the capital, Vientiane.
