With Vietnam’s social security systems failing to meet the needs of its citizens, some prefer the less stigmatized act of selling lottery tickets than begging on the streets. On good days Huong, a single mother in Saigon, can sell 250 lottery tickets each day and earn 230 000 VN-Dong or about 10 US-Dollars per day. But on bad days, Huong only sells 180 tickets and barely makes enough to survive. On these days her husband accompanies her around the city all day, trying to hustle as much as they can.
