The legal state lottery in Laos is being undermined by illegal lotteries based on foreign countries such as Vietnam and China, Finance Minister Bounchom Ubonpaseuth told lawmakers during an extraordinary session of parliament recently. The minister said authorities in charge are able to tackle the problem, but investment is needed to develop a system that can trace those who sell these lotteries.
Lao business interests are largely responsible for selling foreign-based lotteries in the country even though it has its own legal state lottery, RFA’s Lao Service reports. A state official speaking on condition of anonymity says some companies with a stake in the lottery’s work include family members of the ruling elite.
The Government of Liechtenstein has long been a pioneer in the area of Internet gambling, having established the first online lottery and processing the world’s first online lottery transaction in 1995.
