Lao officials are manipulating the nation’s national lottery, rigged drawings to avoid big pay-outs and deprive the public of its fair share of the prizes, a source told RFA’s Lao Service. During the past three months, numbers that have won in the country’s national lottery — which is held three times each week — have disappeared from purchased tickets or shown as different numbers in the subsequent drawings. The latest example came on Oct. 14 this year, when the winning number of 509 vanished from the purchased ticket while appearing as a different number on the resulting drawing.
A provincial official speaking on condition of anonymity echoed the concerns. He said the companies responsible for running the national lottery have connections to the ruling elite and should be taken over by the government. “We need to get back control of the lottery, because the business interests aren’t transparent and can’t be trusted,” he said.
