In Vietnam, the state-owned Vietlott was established in 2011 with VND500 billion in capital and has a projected annual turnover of more than VND300 trillion. In the first eight months of this year, the Mega 6/45 lottery alone brought in VND49 billion for the company.
The lottery has become a major source of revenue for the Vietnamese economy, with more than VND6 trillion contributed by the state to its budget in 2012. But critics say the state-owned company is not transparent and is not responsible for the national lottery’s financial sustainability.
