Lottery is an activity in which people have the chance to win a prize based on the random drawing of numbers. It is a popular recreational activity and an important source of revenue in many countries. The prizes are often used for public service, education, or other charitable causes. Lottery is a form of gambling and is subject to legal regulations in each country. While it is not illegal to play the lottery, it is not recommended for those who are under age or have a gambling problem.

In the United States, lotteries are state-licensed, with a percentage of proceeds going to a designated fund, usually for public education. The games are available in all fifty states and the District of Columbia, as well as many U.S. territories and military bases. Some states also allow players to purchase tickets online. Lottery games have a long history, starting in the 15th century, when France first created a public lottery. The games grew in popularity and eventually spread to the rest of Europe. They were forbidden during the French Revolution, but they returned in the 18th century, with both public and private lotteries.

Today, Canada has four nationwide lotteries: Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max, Daily Grand and Millionaire Life. These are operated by the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation, a consortium of five regional lottery commissions owned by their provincial and territorial governments: Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario) and Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut).

A lottery is a type of game in which people have a chance to win money or goods by selecting numbers from a range. The prizes vary from a small cash sum to valuable items. The odds of winning depend on the number of tickets sold, and the number of winners. The odds of winning are higher for larger prizes.

For poor Vietnamese citizens, selling lottery tickets is a vital source of income. It is more profitable than begging, which is socially detested by the Vietnamese. Huong, a single mother from Saigon, sells tickets with her husband Manh to make enough for their family to survive. On good days they can sell 250 tickets, a daily profit of about 11 US-Dollars. Their day starts at 5 am, when they have a small breakfast of rice and vegetable soup before hitting the streets of Saigon. They work a 16-hour shift. Then they go home to take care of their child. They both work hard to save up enough for their dream: to buy a house and give their daughter the best possible future.
