A Finance Ministry official named Vilasack Phommaluck, who serves on the committee that oversees the lottery, dismissed these accusations as outside his purview. He told RFA that the number of drawings could be cut back to one a week, and that displaying the results live will help to reduce the chances of manipulation.
Other changes are being discussed to address concerns about the lottery’s legitimacy. These include reducing the number of prizes and closing informal football and lottery chance sales through short messaging services. In addition, the Ministry is considering requiring that all lottery games be screened for corruption and other problems.
