In the communist nation of Laos, lottery officials are rigging the system in order to avoid paying large prize amounts, sources told RFA’s Lao Service. Often, the winning numbers on purchased tickets disappear from drawings or are deemed unlucky and do not appear. For example, the winning number of Oct. 14 this year was 09, but the number was not visible on tickets sold throughout the day of the drawing, and it was only revealed an hour before the drawing. This has led to a growing distrust among the public, which has slowed sales.
