Lottery games are games of chance in which numbers are drawn to win a prize. These games are popular in many countries and are regulated by laws in some jurisdictions. Some of the games are played on television and some are played online. The prizes can range from cash to goods, from vacations to cars, or even to the opportunity to run for public office. The origin of lottery games dates back to ancient times, and some even predate the Roman Empire.

Lotteries are now a common form of fundraising for governments and non-government organizations. They are also an important part of the economy in some jurisdictions, especially in developing countries where income tax rates are low. Some of these lotteries are state-run, while others are privately operated and offer large jackpots to attract customers.

In the United States, large portions of state lottery revenues are used to fund public education systems. In addition to state-run games, private companies such as Scientific Games Corporation and GTech Corporation have developed lottery products, including on-line games and mobile applications. These systems are generally offered by third-party providers and require players to sign up through the provider’s website. These sites collect a commission from the player, which is usually a percentage of the winnings.

There are currently four nationwide lottery games in Canada: Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max (which replaced Lotto Super 7 in September 2009), Daily Grand and Millionaire Life. These are administered by the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation, which is a consortium of the provincial/territorial lotteries: Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario) and Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Northwest Territories, Yukon, and Nunavut).

Lao officials are rigging the national lottery to avoid large pay-outs, sources in the communist country tell RFA’s Lao Service. Drawings of the lottery — which are held three times a week — often show numbers that disappear from purchased tickets, or appear to be unlucky. For example, on Oct. 14, the number 509 appeared only as 134 on tickets sold throughout the day, before being changed to 5 just 10 minutes before the drawing.

A senior official speaking on condition of anonymity criticized the national lottery’s work as shady. “The majority of the companies responsible for the lottery are owned by persons with links to the ruling elite,” he said. “These business interests should not be allowed to be responsible for the national lottery.”
