For instance, the winning number of Oct. 14 this year — 509 – appeared only on five purchased tickets, even though it was advertised as the winner on radio throughout the day of the drawing.
In the past, lottery ticket sellers in Laos were mostly children, women, and elderly people, but today there are also young people axed from their professional jobs who hawk tickets to earn a living. Some live in small rooms, and the money they make can be enough to keep them off the streets and out of poverty.
