Drawings are often shown to have numbers that disappear from purchased tickets, or whose numerals are deemed unlucky. For example, the number 509 in the October 14 drawing appeared only as 09 on many tickets purchased that day.
The Laos prime minister’s office has sent a directive to the Ministry of Finance, which oversees the country’s legal state lottery, to work with police to better manage the problem, the sources told RFA. The directive aims to reduce the number of lottery drawings to one per week, and ensure that any winnings are handled in a transparent manner. It also calls for informal football lotteries and lottery chances purchased via short messaging services to be closed down.
