Dokkeo said she would give some of her winnings to family members, but that her first priority was to buy a house. She would also use the money to travel, saying she’d like to visit South Korea, Japan and Vietnam. “If I could, I would have a lot of good friends and I would share this money with them,” she said.

While her family is the top priority, Dokkeo added that she would use part of her winnings to pay for her children’s school fees and medical expenses. She would also give some of it to her church. “I have a lot of good friends and I do like to help people out, especially young people,” she said.

Amid accusations of rigged lottery drawings in Laos, the Finance Ministry’s Vilasack Phommaluck says the committee overseeing the game is investigating the issue. Earlier this year, suspicions were raised after the number 509 appeared only as 5 on purchased tickets in three consecutive lottery drawings. The number is associated with the cat, which is seen as unlucky in Laos.

The chairman of the committee overseeing the lottery, Vilasack Phommaluck, told RFA’s Lao service that the company that runs the game knows what numbers players choose and can manipulate the results. He added that it was outside the committee’s purview to block some numbers or not sell them. But he said that if the lottery company manipulated the numbers, it would be considered a breach of trust and could be punished accordingly. He promised to make changes to ensure transparency. But he also admitted that it would be difficult to tackle the issue because it takes place online. Until there is a way to track the activity, it is impossible to eradicate it completely. However, he did say that the ministry is considering reducing the frequency of the drawings and showing them live to prevent any shenanigans.
