He will split the prize with his 37-year-old wife, Duanpen, and a friend who chipped in $100 to buy their tickets. They will take a lump sum of about $422 million after taxes.
In the US, lottery players can purchase tickets in brick-and-mortar shops and online. In addition to the traditional scratch-off tickets, some jurisdictions offer keno and video lottery terminals (slot machines in all but name). Instant tickets are another way to play. They are typically sold at grocery stores, drugstores and other outlets. They are similar to regular lottery tickets, but do not require a purchase to be eligible to win the top prize.

Lotteries in Canada were illegal until 1967 when the federal Liberal government introduced a bill that would legalize them. The bill was an Omnibus Bill meant to update many obsolete laws. Montreal Mayor Jean Drapeau tried to recover some of the costs of the World’s Fair and a subway system by introducing a “voluntary tax” for $2.00 that gave players the opportunity to participate in the lottery. This ‘tax’ was challenged as a lottery, but the Supreme Court ruled that it did not contravene the law. The lottery became a legitimate operation, with monthly draws drawing participants from across Canada and Europe.
