During the Meiji Era, Japan prohibited private lotteries. Lotteries in Japan today are conducted by the state-owned Lottery Association of Japan and are a vital source of revenue for the nation. In addition to its traditional lottery, the association also runs online gaming and sports betting services.

The Spanish Christmas Lottery is one of the world’s most popular and lucrative lotteries, with a jackpot prize that averages more than EUR2.4 billion per draw. It is operated by the state-owned Loterias y Apuestas Del Estado and draws are held every Wednesday at 20:30 CET. The winning numbers are published in the Official Gazette on Thursdays.
