The communist nation of Laos has a rudimentary national lottery, and the people who run it are accused of rigging results to avoid large pay-outs. Drawings are held three times a week, and numbers that appear on purchased tickets regularly disappear from the results, according to a source who spoke with RFA’s Lao Service. For example, the winning number 509 in an Oct. 14 drawing was not available on any purchased tickets throughout the day, and was changed to the unlucky number 134 only 10 minutes before the draw took place.
