Playing the Lottery Online

Lotteries are games of chance that involve the awarding of prizes to persons based on a random selection process. Many of these games are regulated by governments or are operated by private businesses. Some are played online, while others may be conducted on the ground or over the telephone. Lottery games are a popular form of entertainment and can be very lucrative for those who play them.

Until recently, few people had the opportunity to play lottery-style games on-line. However, in the past decade a number of companies have sprung up that allow players to participate in simulated lotteries on their computer systems, sometimes without even buying a ticket. One of these companies, GTech Corporation of West Greenwich, Rhode Island, administers approximately 70% of the world’s online and instant lottery business. Its simulated games are marketed as being similar to traditional lottery games, but are often much cheaper and offer higher rewards.

In addition to traditional lotteries, many jurisdictions now offer keno and other instant lottery games. In the United States, the most common of these is the Powerball. Its top prize is usually millions of dollars, and the top five winners split the jackpot evenly. Other games that are commonly available include the Mega Millions, the Spanish Loteria de la Compania Camelot Group’s EuroMillions, and the Australian Lottery.

The legality of lottery-style games on the Internet has been a matter of contention in some countries. In the US, for example, the state of New Jersey has passed laws that require online casinos to pay winnings in cash and not as credits. However, these laws have not been applied consistently across the country.

New Zealand is another country where lottery profits are controlled by the government. The money is distributed by the Lottery Grants Board directly to charities and community organizations. The lottery games that are regulated in New Zealand are Lotto, Keno, Instant Kiwi, and Bullseye.

Lottery games have a long history in France, and the French Lottery was founded in 1505 under King Francis I. It was forbidden for two centuries, but in the 17th century the government established public lotteries for the city of Paris and other municipalities, as well as private ones for religious orders.

In the modern era, the French Lottery is managed by the state-owned company Loterias y Apuestas del Estado. The top prize in the country’s most prestigious lottery, the EuroMillions, is around EUR2.4 billion. In 2004, the company launched a pan-European version of its game.

Aside from the legal issues, concerns have been raised about the honesty of the game in other ways. One question is whether the numbers are being manipulated. For example, the number 67 came up in the lottery results for three consecutive months, leading some to suspect that officials are playing favorites. But Vilasack Phommaluck, a finance ministry official on the committee that oversees the lottery, told RFA that manipulating results was outside the purview of his group.
