Thai Lotto – A Popular Form of Legal Gambling in Thailand

Thai Lotto is a legal form of gambling in Thailand. Held on the first and sixteenth days of each month, over 19 million people (approximately 28.6% of population) participate each month – nearly 28.6%. Religious and economic factors play a part; often street vendors can be seen carrying brown wooden boxes containing tickets tied securely onto bicycles for sale on street corners. Prizes remain relatively modest; with the top prize at 6 million baht while second, third, fourth prizes each receiving 1 Million and Half Baht (100,000 each time around!).

Thais commonly believe that certain numbers are more auspicious than others. Dreams or special events such as death may bring up particular numbers as indicators, while an elderly family member could suggest one based on personal experience. Another popular superstition involves purchasing tickets with numbers equaling your date of birth.

At each ticket is printed a six-digit number to prevent counterfeiting; additionally there are other security features to prevent fraudsters. The paper used is made of an unusual yellow, thin and smooth material; its ticket contains an ultra-violet watermark of an imaginary bird seen only under ultra violet light; furthermore it is coated with chemicals which leave permanent stains when dropped onto paper; these numbers can then be verified against an official list of winners announced after each drawing.

Government reforms of GLO’s lottery since its introduction have included permitting vendors to sell tickets online and eliminating minimum purchase requirements of two pairs per person. Some critics, but not all, view these changes positively: some still believe that its control remains too concentrated with GLO and that more needs to be done against corruption – some even taking to protesting by depositing trucks of rice at GLO offices as proof.

Underground lotteries operate alongside the legal lottery system. Tickets cost just a few baht, are sold individually, and winnings tend to be smaller than official prizes; however, buying individual digit tickets makes winning multiple times on one ticket easier.

Bom’s approach to picking lottery numbers is less about faith and more about sharing strategies with friends. He and his group use Line group messaging for sharing different tactics for playing the lottery. His success, though, comes more from making money than from spiritual rewards – his elaborate strategy may not always work but it keeps him coming back for more each time the lottery comes around.
