It also asked the ministry to investigate and take action against companies that sell lottery tickets through short messaging service.
The directive also called on the ministry of finance to take steps to regulate the activities of private business interests that operate lotteries in Laos. These businesses are said to be largely family-owned and often have connections to the ruling elite, including members of parliament and senior state officials. Some of these companies have also been accused of bribing public officials. It is not yet clear how the directive will be implemented. In the past, Lao state officials have been reluctant to address such allegations. This has contributed to the ongoing lack of transparency and integrity in the nation’s lottery.
