The Thai Lottery Is a Big Part of Thai Culture

An iconic image of Thai culture is that of a street vendor carrying a brown wooden box of lottery tickets strapped to his bicycle, selling lottery tickets with slim chances of success and yet nearly 19 million Thais taking part in this trade. Superstition and faith play an integral role in Thai life; consequently, lottery remains legal despite government attempts at curbing it as an income source.

Millions of Thais tune into live television broadcasts of winning numbers being drawn every first and 16th of every month for live lottery announcements, clutching tickets. Though its operation can be complex, its essence remains straightforward. Ticket sellers purchase tickets from the Government Lottery Office (GLO) before selling them directly to customers with six-digit numbers printed on them – winnings are divided based on how many match.

To ensure ticket authenticity, winning numbers are checked against a computer database to validate them as legitimate. To prevent counterfeiting, each ticket is printed on thin yellow paper with an iconic mythical bird watermark and chemicals which react with bleach to reveal any surface stains or discolorations on its surface. In addition, tickets are sealed in plastic containers and have barcodes which can be read using scanners.

Thai Lottery tickets come in two varieties, the TGL ticket offering first prizes of six million baht with bonus prizes totaling 30 million baht, while TCL tickets offer three million baht in prize winnings with 22 million in bonuses*. Before collecting their prize, winners must present their passport or ID card and pay 0.5% stamp duty before claiming their winnings.

Thais find great joy in lottery, which plays an integral part of social life and offers them the opportunity to meet new people while simultaneously increasing enlightenment or making a living. Others still use it to build merit and get lucky.

Fate, faith, imagination and superstition all play an integral part in Thai lottery play. For instance, some players claim their luck is drawn from dreams or predictive patterns such as car accidents, celebrity deaths and plane crashes; others might rely on online gurus who offer secret number formulas or tips that increase chances of winning. Regardless of its odds, lottery participation remains a great source of national pride in Thailand where participation even the king selects his number before each draw!
