Vietnam’s Lottery Online

Lotteries are government-sponsored competitions wherein players are eligible to win prizes based on a random drawing of numbers or symbols. These prizes may be cash or goods. In the United States, lottery games are regulated by state laws and are a popular source of revenue for public services such as education. Private lotteries are also legal in many countries, but must be conducted within strict regulatory frameworks and in compliance with local law.

In the 1990s, computer technology revolutionized the lottery industry by enabling instant ticket printing and processing. As a result, the popularity of online lotteries grew rapidly. Today, there are more than 400 Internet-based lotteries. The majority of these offer the same prize options as traditional lotteries, including jackpots and instant games. They also provide the convenience of mobile and desktop Internet access, and they can support large-scale multilingual operations.

The lottery is a major source of state revenue in Australia, and is operated by several different organisations. In addition to the national operator, Tatts Group, there are two licensed re-sellers of Australian lottery products, Netlotto Pty Ltd and Jumbo Interactive, as well as several other private companies. The lottery is a highly competitive business, and despite recent falls in sales, it remains a significant source of revenue for the nation.

For some poor Vietnamese people, selling lottery tickets is the only source of income. In contrast to countries such as South Korea or Singapore, Vietnam’s social security systems are not yet capable of handling the number of less fortunate citizens. As a consequence, many choose to sell lottery tickets over the socially detested act of begging. On a good day, a lottery ticket seller can make up to 230 000 VN-Dong, about 10 US-Dollars.

On Aug. 17, the office of Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith sent a directive requesting that the Ministry of Finance, which oversees the country’s legal state lottery, work with the Ministry of Public Security to better manage the problem. It ordered the reduction of drawing times from two to one per week and that winnings be handled more transparently. It also instructed that informal football lotteries and lottery chances purchased through short messaging service be shut down.

Lottery-style games were first introduced in Europe in the 16th century. In the early 19th century, private lotteries were established in the US. A few even received patents for new types of lotteries, which would in today’s vernacular be called business method patents. In the 17th century, public lotteries began to be organized as a way of raising money for the Paris city government (called Loterie de la Chambre du Commerce) and for religious orders in convents. By the late 18th century, public lotteries were widely used in France and throughout Europe. During the French Revolution, they fell out of favor but reappeared in the 1790s as private lotteries.
