Lotteries are a type of gambling in which people pay a small amount of money to have a chance at winning a larger prize. The prize is usually cash, goods, or services. In some countries, government-sponsored lotteries exist. In others, private businesses operate lotteries under license from the government. A large percentage of the proceeds from lotteries goes to public education systems.

Lottery games are a common form of recreation for many people, especially in the United States. The most popular lottery game is the Powerball, which has a jackpot of approximately US$1 billion and a second-place prize of tens of millions of dollars. Other major lotteries include Mega Millions, EuroMillions, and the Spanish Christmas Lottery.

A number of lotteries are operated by state governments, while others are run by a combination of federal, provincial, and local agencies. In Canada, the state-owned Interprovincial Lottery Corporation manages four nationwide lotteries: Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max (which replaced Lotto Super 7 in September 2009), Daily Grand, and Millionaire Life. The company also operates the European-wide EuroMillions. Other national lotteries in Canada are the Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), and Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario).

The National Lottery is a multi-national game with its head office in London. It is one of the largest in the world and provides its players with a number of benefits, including a free ticket and online access to results and draws. The National Lottery also contributes to charitable projects in the UK and other countries. In addition to a free lottery ticket, the National Lottery sells subscription tickets.

In the Republic of Liechtenstein, the International Lottery in Liechtenstein Foundation (ILLF) operates Internet lotteries under a licence from the state government. It pioneered Internet gaming and launched the first online lottery website in 1995, PLUS Lotto. It is the oldest and most respected Internet lottery operator in Europe. In addition to operating the Internet lotteries, the ILLF also supports charity projects worldwide and is the leading online retailer of scratchcards in the region.

In Laos, the legal status of gambling is complicated. Gambling is illegal in most places, but some are allowed in Special Economic Zones. In these zones, a wide range of casino games are offered. In general, however, casinos in Laos are not licensed to accept foreign players. Instead, players from abroad can gamble at many online casinos that accept players from Laos.
