Lottery officials in the communist country of Laos are rigging the lottery, sources in the Southeast Asian nation say. They manipulate winning numbers in order to avoid large pay-outs, according to these sources. Drawings for the national lottery, held three times a week, sometimes show numbers that appear on purchased tickets only briefly before they disappear from view. Other sources say that winners are selected by computer programs and that the results of the drawing cannot be trusted.

There are a few land-based casinos in Laos, and some people also play online casino games, which are available in several languages. Although gambling is technically illegal in the country, many residents of Laos play in offshore casinos without being caught.
