Lottery officials in Laos are accused of falsifying lottery drawings to reduce large pay-outs, according to sources in the communist nation. Drawings held three times weekly often feature numbers which vanish from purchased tickets or seem unlikely to be chosen; one example being when 509 appeared only once as five during an October 14 draw when many players attempted to purchase tickets with its “random number”, said one resident of Vientiane as reported by RFA’s Lao Service.
Alleged manipulation of the national lottery has raised serious concerns over its fairness and the honesty of state-run lottery company executives, infuriating many who believe the government is seeking to suppress competition while favoring private business interests instead of encouraging loyalty towards it.
