For example, the winning number 509 appeared only as a five on tickets purchased throughout the day of the Oct. 14 drawing, a source said.

For some, selling lottery tickets is a better alternative to the socially detested act of begging on the streets. Lottery ticket sellers in the southern city of Saigon work 16-hour shifts and make about 230 000 VN-Dong per day, which is enough to survive for many. Single mother Huong and her husband, Manh, sell the lottery tickets in front of their home in a busy Saigon neighborhood. On good days they can sell 250 tickets and earn a daily profit of about 11 US-Dollars. On bad days, they sell fewer than 180 tickets and may have to turn away customers. The couple also has a child on the way, and Huong’s family depends on her income for survival.
